A random emoji is a constraint, and constraints are what get people started. Here are the uses that actually hold up in a room full of real people, rather than the ones that sound good in a list.
Icebreakers that do not make people wince
Most icebreakers fail because they ask for something personal from someone who has just walked into the room. An emoji fixes that by giving people something outside themselves to talk about. Draw one emoji per person and ask each of them to explain, in one sentence, how it describes their week. The answers are usually funnier and more honest than anything a direct question would produce, because nobody has to volunteer a topic.

How emoji actually work
Emoji look like images but behave like letters, and almost every confusing thing about them follows from that one fact. Understanding it takes about four minutes and explains why an emoji you sent looks different on your friendโs phone, why some arrive as an empty box, and why a single emoji can make a character counter jump by more than one.
Code points, not pictures
Every emoji is a character in Unicode, the standard that assigns a number to every letter, digit and symbol used in writing. That number is called a code point, and it is written in the form U+1F600, which is the grinning face. When you send an emoji you are not sending an image file. You are sending that number, exactly as you would send the number behind the letter A.
The word itself comes from Japanese: e for picture and mojifor character. The resemblance to โemotionโ is a coincidence. Emoji began on Japanese mobile networks in the late 1990s and were absorbed into Unicode in 2010, at which point they stopped being a carrier feature and became part of text itself. New ones are added through a proposal process run by the Unicode Consortium, which is why a batch appears each year rather than continuously.
Why the same emoji looks different everywhere
Unicode standardises the number and the name. It does not standardise the drawing. Each platform ships its own emoji font, so Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung are all free to interpret grinning face with smiling eyes however their designers see fit. The meaning is supposed to survive the journey; the artwork is not.
Usually that is harmless. Occasionally it is not, because a difference in drawing can be a difference in tone. There is a well-documented history of the same emoji reading as cheerful on one platform and pained on another, and platforms have quietly redrawn emoji when the mismatch caused real confusion. If a message depends on the precise expression of a face, write the words instead.
This is also why emoji look wrong in screenshots taken on a different device from yours, and why a carefully chosen emoji in a logo or a heading is a risk: you are trusting every readerโs font to agree with yours.
Skin tones and joined sequences
A skin tone is not a separate emoji. It is a modifier character that follows the base emoji, drawn from a set of five shades based on the Fitzpatrick scale. Your device sees two characters in a row and draws them as one image. Send the same pair to a system that does not support modifiers and you get the base emoji followed by a small colour swatch, which is the fallback working exactly as designed.
The same trick, taken further, produces the complicated emoji. An invisible character called the zero width joiner glues separate emoji into a single glyph: a woman, a joiner and a laptop become a woman technologist; several people and joiners become a family. These are called ZWJ sequences, and they are the reason a family emoji can be built from five or more code points. When a platform does not recognise a particular combination, it falls back to showing the ingredients side by side, which is why you sometimes receive two people and a heart instead of a couple.
Flags work on a related principle. Each flag emoji is a pair of regional indicator letters matching the countryโs two-letter code, so the flag of Japan is the letters J and P rendered as one glyph. Platforms that do not draw flags show the two letters, which is exactly why you occasionally see a bare country code where a flag should be. Empty boxes, and why one emoji counts as two characters
The empty rectangle you sometimes get instead of an emoji has a nickname: tofu. It means your device understands that a character is there but has no glyph for it, almost always because the emoji is newer than the emoji font installed on the machine. An operating system update usually fixes it, and there is nothing you can do from the sending end.
A related oddity turns up in character counters. Most software stores text in a format where common characters take one unit and emoji take two, so a single emoji often counts as two characters in a message limit. A ZWJ sequence such as a family can count as far more. This is not a bug: the counter is measuring storage units, not things you can see. It also explains why pressing backspace once after a complicated emoji sometimes leaves fragments behind.
One last practical note. A handful of characters, such as the heart and several arrows, existed as plain text symbols long before emoji did. They need an invisible presentation selector after them to be drawn in colour, which is why the same heart can appear as a flat black outline in one app and a red emoji in another.
